Why did I choose my major?
Hi bloggers, this is the story about how I decided to study Social Work. When I was in high school, I didn't know what I wanted to study. Since I was good in every subject, it was even harder for me to choose an area of study. At the time I had to choose because I didn't have any time left, I knew that I wanted something related to biology and I found Biotechnology. At the time it seems an interesting career, therefore I decided to study Molecular biotechnology engineering at Universidad de Chile.
A time after I realized that Biotechnology wasn't what I expected, I had bad grades and I felt bad about myself. Despite this, I continued studying biotechnology until the fourth year of university. Then I couldn't resist anymore, I was unhappy, So I left the university and I toke some time to think what I was going to do with my life. After of a lot of research, I found Social Work, a beautiful career that have everything I wanted. Social Work is a career that gives you the tools to fight against social inequality, among other related things. I made the procedure to move to Social Work internally, I was lucky and was accepted.
Now I study my second semester of Social Work, and it has been the best choice I have ever made. I'm really happy and comfortable with my major. The Social Work major has been better than I expected. One day I hope to become a good critical social worker able to question the law and society to fight inequality.

ReplyDeleteHello Mahely! Seems a hard election, but at the same time those changes was for being better. I have questions for you: Between careers, themes are too different? Can you see a connection between Biotechnology and Social Work?
ReplyDeleteHi María José. It's hard to tell, but even it looks impossible, for me exist a connection because both major ar scientific carrers. Both have certain similarities in their research methods. Furthermore, biotechnology can have an environmental focus so it could be related to environmental struggles and the problems of sacrificial territories.
DeleteHi Marely, I'm glad that after your experience with biotechnology you were able to find a career that you are passionate about.
